Accessing Books
- Online Books:
Over 25,000 free books available on the web.
- Bookshare:
Bookshare.org now has over 25,500 books available for our subscribers to download in DAISY or BRF.
- American Printing House for the Blind:
- APH maintains and promotes the Louis Database of Accessible Materials for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired.
Louis contains information on nearly 200,000 titles in accessible formats including Braille, large print, sound recording,
and electronic files. Information is contributed by over 180 agencies throughout the United States.
- Book PortTM is a flexible book reading device available through APH that consists of a small, portable unit with a
keypad and earbuds, plus accompanying software. It features both text-to-speech capabilities and digital audio support.
This means you may read electronic files (with synthetic speech) or digital recorded books (with human speech).
- Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic:
RFB&D's library contains more than 109,000 titles in a broad variety of subjects, from literature and history
to math and the sciences, at all academic levels, from kindergarten through post-graduate and professional.
Chances are, if the book is in your curriculum, it's in this library! Anyone with a documented disability-
including a visual impairment, learning disability or other physical disability which makes reading standard print
difficult or impossible-is eligible to use RFB&D's audio textbooks but in order to access our library, you
need to become a member. For telephone service please call (800) 221-4792 between the hours of 8:30 AM and
4:45 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
